EPISODE 256 - LEGENDS...30 YEARS LATER PART 4

This is it, folks!  The final chapter of my four part series about the DC Comics crossover event...Legends!  Legends turns 30 this year and I thought it deserved some coverage.  But not just any coverage...oh no...I decided to not only cover the six issue main series but each and every crossover chapter as well.  This time out my guests and I cover the epic conclusion to Darkseid's evil plan to wipe out the very concept of heroism on Earth.  In addition to the conclusion to Superman's trip to Apokolips, the "final" Justice League adventure, a battle with the Time Trapper and an origin for a certain team of villains that form some sort of squad.

Comics covered in this episode include..

Once again I want to thank all of the guests I had on over the last four episodes.  This series would not have been as epic as it was without them.  I cannot recommend each and every one of their shows enough.

I have gotten a good bit of feedback on social media about this series and the one aspect that has gotten the most attention is the music drops I put before and after each segment.  Here is the full list of songs I used during the course of Legends...30 Years Later.

  • Secret Origins #14 - Carry On by Fun
  • Legends #6 - You're The Voice by John Farnham
  • Wrap Up - The End of the Tour by They Might Be Giants
  • End Theme - End Credits from the Masters of the Universe score by Bill Conti

And that's pretty much it.  As I said in at the end of the episode this series was so much fun to put together and I am a bit bummed out that it's over.  Someday I hope to get back to covering Crisis on Infinite Earths but beyond that I don't think any of the other crossovers have my love and devotion like Legends does outside of Invasion!  Siskoid and Bass are doing such an amazing job covering Invasion! over at The Fire and Water Podcast Network I wouldn't even think of touching of that series.  So for now this is it for me and DC crossovers.

In my end piece thing I mentioned that The Irredeemable Shag (the Diet Coke of Evil) hosted Justice League International: The Bwa-Ha-Ha Podcast and that Aaron Head Moss hosted The Task Force X Podcast.  Give those a listen.  I think you'll like them.

Next Time: Nothing next week as I need a break but the week after that I'll have the Views 2017 Christmas Special!

Really enjoying your podcasts. I went back and was listening to your Star Wars episodes before the Force Awakens was released in theaters. Really really enjoyed those. Especially the action figure one. In the episode you spoke about possibly doing a GI Joe episode like that, which I would love to hear. Hope that comes up soon and I would like to know your fav joe characters and figures. Thank so much, still working my way thru your back log and moving to your superman podcast next. Heard about you on the Hey Kids comic podcast. Great when you and Andy get together to talk Star Wars and other comics

Hi Michael, Congratulations on accomplishing such an undertaking! This series was a joy to listen to! I liked it better than I liked the comics! This is my first venture into your Longbox. I have followed you here from various Fire and Water 'casters. I look forward to listening to older episodes as well as new ones! You retrospective brought me back to those early post-Crisis days. My comic-collecting days were wrapping up just as yours were beginning. I hope I am not perceived as an old cranky guy, but I would like to share my thoughts. 1. I don't remember particularly liking Legends. I may have been eager to see John Byrne's depiction of so many DC characters, but my fondness for his art was already waning by then. Mostly what annoyed me was the central conceit of Darkseid making a bet with the Phantom Stranger. This was out of character for Darkseid, as it had nothing to do with the Anti-Life Equation. Why would he give two minutes to the Phantom Stranger? Why is Phantom Stranger on Apokolips? I just couldn't buy it. 2. How is Warlord in any way a super-hero? He is not masked, nor does he have special powers. He's a guy who fight dinosaurs and slavers, and rescues his woman du jour. He isn't the self-appointed protector of justice in Skartaris! Why would Darkseid even care about Skartaris? It's just another little section of Earth. How is it any more important than Africa or Asia? I would have liked to hear the Sutherlands make the case for Travis Morgan, though. 3. I don't believe I bought any of the crossover books other than those I was buying already. I had long before quit Warlord and JLA and Firestorm. As you pointed out, there really weren't that many crossover books and many that were labelled as such had very little to do with the story in Legends. 4. Superman. Don't take it personally. I know this is where you took up with him. This is where I broke up with him. I liked nothing about Man of Steel, yet I gave the three titles a six-month chance. The story you reviewed her helped to push me away. After so much hype preceding "The New Superman" about getting rid of "silly" elements, they certainly created their own "silly" elements. For instance, Superman's hair doesn't grow under Earth's yellow sun was deemed silly. Out went that concept. Yet something about Superman's unique molecular structure repels dirt? Also, does he have a trunkful of capes, or just a lot of sewing kits handy as his cape was shredded almost every issue. How long does Clark Kent run around Metropolis evading the Omega beams? Maybe he's not as fast as a speeding bullet anymore, but apparently neither are the Omega beams! He could run and take off his jacket at the same time? Or did he think that some unexplained force would want Clark instead of Superman? Finally the thing that really did it for me. Superman falls into a firepit and gets amnesia. In the old days that could have been explained by Red Kryptonite. Now, there is no explanation. It just happens But from there it gets worse, because Superman is raped. If he was sexually active while not in his right mind, he was taken advantage of. I don't like it. What if that had been Supergirl and Baron Bedlam instead of Superman and Amazing Grace? How is it different?
I remember being very interested in how DC was going to utilize their new "only one world" universe. I just didn't actually like most of the stories. (I did like JLI and just today I listened to you and Shagg discussing issue 2!) I don't want to keep making negative comments, so I want to close with this. At the very same time that Legends the comic book was appearing on newsstands all around the country, Carol Channing and Mary Martin were also touring the country in a play titled "Legends!"
Wein, Ostrander, Byrne, Channing, and Martin. Legendary.

Thanks for the mention.

I'm so far behind, I'm trying to get up to these episodes, as I loved this series and I enjoy hearing you talk about comics....
